Mount Pearl brings back Frosty, in a big way

By Mark Squibb/January 13, 2023

After two years of cancellations and setbacks due to COVID-19, Mount Pearl kicked off the 2023 Frosty Festival in style with a luncheon Thursday afternoon for event sponsors and honourable guests.

“We’re glad to be back, we’ve really missed it,” Mayor Dave Aker said to the crowd of about 200 who showed up at the Reid Centre on Thursday. “The Frosty Festival is such a part of the well-being, not only of the citizens of, but of the region. It’s good for economic development potential, as we see with all the sponsors and businesses here today, and it’s also very good for the physical activity that it provides for our residents. It’s also very good for our mental health. So, we’ve really missed it, and we’re glad it’s back.”

Wanda Tiller, who first become involved with the Frosty Festival selling Frosty buttons as a young girl, is chairperson of this year’s Mount Pearl Frosty Festival, and took a moment to thank the City, sponsors, and volunteers, all who work to make the festival a reality.

“We honestly couldn’t do this without you,” Tiller told the crowd. “I know you could be doing so many other things with your resources and your time, so we truly appreciate that you’ve chosen to support the Mount Pearl Frosty Festival.”

Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs Krista Lynn Howell also spoke at the luncheon.

“The winter months here in Newfoundland and Labrador are long and cold, and events like the Frosty Festival allow residents to prioritize their social well-being by getting out and participating in social activists,” said Howell, adding that many of the activities encourage physical well-being as well.

The festival is sponsored by a number of corporate donors, volunteer groups, and all three levels of government.

This year’s Festival, the 41st such festival in a long and storied history that began in 1983, runs from February 8th through the 16th. Events include the Parade of Lights, free swims, ‘Fur-sty’ Festival Dog Walk, a kids carnival, special breakfasts, free skates, and of course, Frosty’s Big Birthday Party and the Winter Block Party.
