Green Team working to restore Waterford River

Local students with the Conservation Corps Newfoundland and Labrador's (CCNL) Green Team are working with CCNL Conservation Coordinator Sabina Akhter to research, assess, and restore
areas of the Waterford River watershed.

Folks enjoy hiking alongside the river, which flows through St. John’s, Mount Pearl, and
Paradise, but sadly, the river is susceptible to pollution. The Green Team is busy this summer conducting clean ups, planting trees, undertaking rehabilitation activities in certain areas of the watershed, and raising environmental awareness among local youth.

Pending approval from governments and other partners, the Green Team hopes to address erosion on the riverbank by placing natural infrastructure that can help dissipate the river's energy away from its eroded banks. It’s hoped this will prevent future erosion and flooding while encouraging natural regeneration.
