Mount Pearl minor hockey team takes aim at Good Deeds Cup

It what has become an annual tradition, Roary MacPherson’s boys’ hockey team is making a run for the Chevrolet Good Deeds Cup.

The theme of this year’s Good Deed Cup is to make hockey more inclusive, by helping bring people of all different backgrounds and abilities into the game.

The winner of the Cup will receive a $100,000 donation to the charity of their choice.

Given the theme, MacPherson said he knew a charity that just fit.

“We have a great charity this year, we’ve teamed up with the Association for New Canadians,” said MacPherson.

In partnership with the association, the Kings got together with a number of other children a few weeks back at the Glacier to give them a skating lesson. For some, it was their first time ever being on ice, let alone on skates.

A friend volunteered to shoot and edit the video, which was promptly submitted to the contest.

MacPherson says it’s good not only for children to feel included by learning to play a game that is such an integral part of Canadian identify, but that it’s good for the team’s players to spend time helping others in whatever way they can.

Regional finalists from all across the country will be selected on March 19, and voting will be open from March 19 until April 2.
