Mount Pearl Soccer Association tips its hat to the best of the best

The Mount Pearl Soccer Association (MPSA) has been busy this week rolling out this year’s award winners.

Mary-Lou Aylward of the MPSA under 15 girls tier 2(T2) premiere youth league (PYL) team was awarded the Dave LeGrow Female Youth Athlete of the Year, while Quinn Norman of the MPSA under 13 boys PYL team was awarded the Neil Bodman Youth Male Athlete of the Year.

Eric Glencross was awarded the Senior Male Athlete of the Year award. Glencross began playing for the Wade Abbott Dentistry Men’s Masters team, while Senior Female Player of the Year was awarded to Hickman Motors Ladies Intermediate team member Bryanna Maher.

Phil Molloy was awarded Coach of the Year. Molloy coached both the under 17 boys PYL and an under 11 girls Metro team this past season.

The under 15 girls T2 PYL team was recognised as the Team of the Year. The team won Silver at the Newfoundland and Labrador Soccer Association (NLSA) mega and the bronze medal in playoffs.

Lisa Inkpen received this year’s Recognition Award. She coached the girls under 15 T2 PYL team while also helping other coaches with their teams.

Craig Dyer was named Volunteer of the Year. Dyer is ready to lend a helping hand whenever needed and can often be seen cheering along the sidelines during games.

This year’s Achievement Award went to Courtney Abbott. This season, Abbott was a goalkeeping coach for the two girls teams, joined the MPSA summer staff, and played soccer herself.

MPSA Hall of Famer, MPSA Honorary Lifetime Member, first ever president of the MPSA, and long time MPSA volunteer Ed Moyst was awarded the Alumni of the Year Award.

Ethan Harris was awarded the Herb Jenkins award for Official of the Year.

There was an undercurrent of sadness to this year’s Herb Jenkins award, as Herb himself died on November 12.

Jenkins was inducted as an Honorary Life Member last year, and the award was named in his honour last year. He was a member of the association since the 70’s, and coached countless teams over the years. Jenkins was the province’s first National Referee and had been inducted into both the NLSA and MPSA Hall of Fames.

The MPSA will honour this year’s award winners and induct six new members into the Hall of Fame, this Saturday night during the 50th anniversary award banquet.
